Path of Exile 2 0.5.5 Latest News: What Players Should Know About Forbidden Rites

September 1, 2026 7 Min Read

Path of Exile 2 0.5.5 is almost here, and honestly, this is one of those updates that feels more interesting the closer we get to it.

Grinding Gear Games has confirmed that the 0.5.5 update, also known as the Forbidden Rites event, will launch on September 4, 2026 at 1 PM PDT. Unlike a normal balance patch, this update is built around a fresh event economy, new gameplay systems, a major Trial of Chaos rework, and several changes aimed at making the road toward endgame smoother.

And yes, there is one important thing to clear up first: the Duelist is not coming with 0.5.5. GGG has confirmed that the Duelist and sword weapon system are planned for the full 1.0 release in December.

So what exactly should PoE 2 players be looking forward to?

Forbidden Rites Is More Than Just Another Event

The biggest feature of 0.5.5 is obviously the Forbidden Rites event.

The basic idea is pretty interesting because Ritual encounters are being pushed into the campaign instead of being something players only think about once they reach the Atlas. Rituals can appear throughout campaign zones, and they can also create much more dangerous encounters by chaining bosses together.

This changes the feeling of leveling quite a bit.

Normally, experienced players eventually learn to rush through campaign areas because the real focus is getting to maps. Forbidden Rites gives you another reason to actually pay attention to what is happening inside those zones.

Ritual encounters can reward currency, items and other useful progression resources. More importantly, the encounters can escalate as players move through them, with later Rituals potentially throwing multiple bosses into the same fight.

For players who enjoy chaotic encounters, this could be one of the more entertaining ways to level in PoE 2.

The Trial of Chaos Is Getting a Serious Rework

This is probably the part of 0.5.5 I’m personally most interested in.

Trial of Chaos has always had an awkward reputation. The concept is good, but the experience could be frustrating, especially when certain modifiers or encounter types made a run feel more annoying than rewarding.

GGG is trying to address that in 0.5.5.

The reworked Trial of Chaos allows players to leave between rooms and return later without losing their progress. There are also more straightforward combat encounters, while some of the less popular objectives have been reduced.

The reward structure is changing as well.

Players can find additional chests between rooms, and rewards are being shifted toward currency and Soul Cores rather than random corrupted items. Soul Cores themselves have also been reworked, with new ones being added.

The biggest change for endgame players is that the Trial of Chaos can now go up to 30 rooms instead of stopping at 10.

That should make the activity feel much more like a proper endgame challenge rather than something you run occasionally for specific rewards.

There are also wager modifiers that allow players to increase potential rewards while making the selected room modifiers more difficult. That’s a very PoE-style risk-versus-reward system, and I suspect experienced players are going to spend a lot of time figuring out which combinations are actually worth taking.

Wildwood Is Coming Back in a New Form

Another interesting part of 0.5.5 is the return of Wildwood-style gameplay.

The Viridian Wildwood can now be accessed through Sacred Blooms in maps. Once inside, players have to collect Wisps before leaving the area.

The interesting part is what happens afterward.

The Wisps can empower monsters in the surrounding map, increasing both difficulty and potential rewards. Different Wisps have different effects, with some upgrading monsters, others adding modifiers to rare enemies, and others increasing item rarity.

This sounds like exactly the sort of mechanic that could become extremely profitable once players figure out the optimal combinations.

But there’s also a catch: stronger monsters mean that builds with weak defenses are going to have a bad time.

If you’re planning to jump into 0.5.5 with a character that barely survives difficult map modifiers, I’d probably rethink that plan before going all-in on Wildwood encounters.

Expedition Is Becoming Part of the Core Game

Another important change is that Expedition content from Runes of Aldur is moving into the permanent game.

Expeditions will be available from Act 4 onward, and Expedition Tablets are being added. Players can also encounter multiple Remnant and Expedition encounters within the same zone.

For long-time PoE players, this is not a huge surprise. Expedition has always been one of those mechanics that fits naturally into the game’s broader progression system.

The bigger question is how valuable it will become once everyone has access to it consistently.

If you’re interested in building up currency, crafting materials or other resources during the new event, Expedition is definitely something I’d keep an eye on rather than skipping automatically.

Endgame Progression Should Feel Less Tedious

0.5.5 isn’t only about adding new mechanics.

There are also some changes to how players move through the endgame.

The Endgame Fortress can now be completed more quickly after finishing the main Arbiter of Divinity quest line. Players can pursue another set of encounters to access the harder version of the Arbiter and finish the Fortress progression more efficiently.

Abyssal Ravines are also being added to the Atlas, bringing additional Abyss encounters and a progression chain that becomes increasingly difficult before ending with a guaranteed Abyssal Boss encounter.

These changes might not sound as exciting as a new class or a completely new league mechanic, but experienced players know that endgame friction matters.

If a system can remove unnecessary running around and let players spend more time actually playing the content they want, that’s a good change.

Don’t Expect a Huge Balance Shake-Up

One thing that might surprise some players is that 0.5.5 isn’t being positioned as a massive balance patch.

Current information indicates that there are no major balance changes coming with the update.

That is actually pretty important when planning a league starter.

If you’re coming into Forbidden Rites with a build that already works well in the current 0.5 environment, there’s less reason to assume that it will suddenly become unusable.

Of course, new mechanics can still change the value of different builds.

A build that clears Ritual encounters quickly could feel much better during campaign progression, while strong defensive builds may benefit more from the increasingly dangerous Wildwood and Trial of Chaos content.

So I wouldn’t obsess over finding some completely broken 0.5.5 build before launch. A reliable character that clears comfortably is probably going to be more useful than a theoretical build that looks amazing on paper but falls apart when the difficulty increases.

What About the Duelist?

This is probably the biggest point of confusion right now.

The Duelist has been officially shown as part of Path of Exile 2’s 1.0 launch rather than 0.5.5.

The class brings swords into the game, including one-handed and two-handed sword options, and should open up a completely different set of melee build possibilities. However, players won’t be able to start experimenting with the full Duelist experience when Forbidden Rites launches.

That is being saved for the December 1.0 release.

And honestly, I’m fine with that.

If GGG is using 0.5.5 as the final major event before 1.0, it makes sense to keep one of the biggest new class and weapon additions for the actual launch.

Is 0.5.5 Worth Playing?

I’d say yes, especially if you’ve been away from PoE 2 for a while.

This isn’t necessarily the update that completely changes the game. It’s more like a bridge between the current Early Access experience and the much bigger 1.0 release coming later this year.

The appeal of 0.5.5 is the combination of a fresh economy, Forbidden Rites encounters, Wildwood content, permanent Expedition mechanics and a much more developed Trial of Chaos.

For new players, it should be a pretty good time to jump in because everyone starts on the same fresh event economy.

For returning players, it gives you an excuse to dust off an old character concept and try something different before 1.0 arrives.

And for the hardcore crowd, the real game will probably be figuring out which combinations of Rituals, Wildwood, Expedition and endgame content produce the best rewards.

That’s usually where PoE becomes interesting anyway.

Looking Ahead to Path of Exile 2 1.0

The bigger story behind 0.5.5 is that it is no longer just another Early Access update.

Path of Exile 2 is scheduled to leave Early Access and launch its full 1.0 version on December 11, 2026. The release is expected to bring the Duelist, swords and additional campaign content, making 0.5.5 feel like one of the final stops before the game’s full launch.

That makes Forbidden Rites worth paying attention to even if you’re planning to wait for 1.0.

It gives GGG one more chance to test systems, see how players interact with the economy, and smooth out some of the rougher parts of the current endgame.

For players who are already invested in PoE 2, September 4 should be a pretty busy day.

For everyone else, this might be the point where it becomes worth checking back in.

And personally, I’d rather spend the next few months experimenting with builds and figuring out the new mechanics than sitting around waiting for 1.0. The game is still changing, but that’s also what makes this stage of PoE 2 interesting.
